When I was growing up in Tennessee, I lived with my Grammy Fowler until I was 8 years old... I loved Exploring the old barn behind the house, climbing trees, Running around the cool, dark basement filled with Pa's tools, Granny's canning supplies & my dad's workout & boxing equipment... Horsing around with my cousins & my friends on Highland Ave. in Cookeville, Tn.. Behind 1st Tennessee Bank, I miss that place...
But the best part was waking up to a house already filling with breakfast smells -- eggs, country ham -- and walking into the kitchen to find that Granny had made a batch of biscuits and her famous chocolate gravy.!!!! My Grammy was a fabulous cook.. Another favorite was her homemade Cherry Pie, the crust was flaky & beautiful basket weaved on top.... Maybe I will put that one on next... ;o)
To this day, I've never heard of chocolate gravy outside my family. I asked Granny why she ever started cooking it. She told me it was because my grandfather's mom had made it for him, and Granny wanted to make Pa something familiar -- yet special -- when they were newlyweds.
I can't think of anything better than this....;o)
Okay, let's get one thing out of the way: Yes, the notion of chocolate gravy for breakfast is ludicrous! I mean, it's basically a sort of chocolate pudding served on biscuits.
It's ridiculous. I don't care.
And neither will you.
I very much fuel my body with healthy foods.. But you are just not living if you don't reward yourself sometimes... This is a wonderful comfort food...(just not often) ;o)
The next time you want to make someone feel special (even if it's yourself!), make up a batch of buttermilk biscuits, douse them in this rich, gooey, chocolaty deliciousness, and watch the smiles light up around your table..... Enjoy... ;o)

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/3 cup sugar
2 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Mix dry ingredients well. Slowly add milk until mixture is smooth. Cook very slowly over low heat, stirring frequently. When it gets thick enough, remove from stove. Add vanilla and butter.
Enjoy over biscuits.
